Brexit an ‘aberration’ in bid to build peace process, claims US Speaker
BREXIT should be just an “aberration” in the bid to strengthen the peace process, US congresswoman Nancy Pelosi said.
The House of Representatives speaker yesterday visited the border, which has become a stumbling block to the UK’S withdrawal from the EU.
Ms Pelosi, who was greeted by antibrexit activists during her short stop at the frontier in Derry, said the US had a vested interest in peace in the North.
The Democrat added: “We have said Nancy Pelosi at mock checkpoint in Derry yesterday we are guarantors for the Good Friday Agreement because we believe it is fair to both sides.
“We believe Brexit should be just an aberration in this discussion as we continue to strengthen our peace generated by the Good Friday accord.”
The congresswoman also met border groups who oppose Brexit at a mock customs checkpoint.
Earlier this week she warned US trade talks with the UK could be endangered if the agreement was compromised. IRISH citizens in the North will continue to be European in all circumstances, Leo Varadkar said yesterday.
He added people will still benefit from “important rights” and will not be discriminated against over their nationality.
Thousands of nationalists north of the border have called on the Taoiseach to ensure they are protected as the political fallout over the EU split continues.
In his annual address to Seanad Eireann, he said the Withdrawal Agreement contains a commitment from the UK that Brexit will not result in any diminution of the rights set out in the Good Friday Agreement.
Mr Varadkar added: “Irish citizens in Northern Ireland will continue to be
European citizens in all circumstances.”
