A police official said yesterday that an electrical short-circuit was the most likely cause.

The Heritage Foundation, which is organising the fund, said A HISTORIC Irish cathedral could go up in flames during restoration work like Notre Dame, it has been claimed.

Top conservation architect John Beauchamp, who is overseeing the revamp of St Patrick’s in Dublin, told of his fears after the Paris fire this week.

He believes the blaze was most likely caused by “human error” but it should not prevent work at the Irish landmark going ahead.

A safety review of the €8.5million project, which is due to start later this year, has been ordered.

Mr Beauchamp said: “We have in place sophisticated fire detection measures, fire protection measures and it is outraged by gangs trying to cash in.

A spokesman said: “Many scams have been reported to us in France and abroad. We do not raise funds by email, mail or phone.”

“We have a very competent professional team and providing they follow the contractual requirements we see no reason why we shouldn’t carry on.”

St Patrick’s, founded in 1192, is one of the oldest churches in the country.

Mr Beauchamp told RTE’S Morning Ireland: “Our project this summer and going forward for nearly two years will be to put a temporary roof over the building and replace the slates and make sure the building is watertight.

“It is a sophisticated construction project and it contains requirements for all the team to be very vigilant about safety, fire and security.” donors and private contributors have already helped raise €1billion.
