600,000,000 eggs sold per year as Mairead and Dave have cracking time

WE are a nation obsessed with eggs – and research has revealed 600 million were sold in Ireland last year.

To celebrate World Egg Day on Friday, Bord Bia has partnered with Today FM presenter Mairead Ronan and professional rugby player Dave Kearney.

Mum-of-three Mairead, 39, said: “It can be tough trying to feed a family like mine as we are often on different schedules but there will always be eggs in my house.

“A quiche is always a winner, really easy to make, super tasty and a great way to get extra veggies and goodness into the kids.”

While Leinster star Dave, 30, said they are essential to keep him in shape, adding: “With the level of training that I do, nutrition is critical, particularly getting enough natural protein into my diet.

“Eggs are a staple of my diet, especially because they are so quick to make and a great protein boost after training.”

Figures from Bord Bia show 83% of us are egg-cellent at gobbling down the high protein food every week, an increase of 3% since 2017. Those aged 25 to 44 with kids are on average eating eggs 88 times per year. In a survey which included 1,000 online interviews of shoppers, 60% of adults revealed they have eggs for breakfast.

Dietician Orla Walsh said: “In my line of work I meet people with varying nutritional needs but the one common denominator is always time.

“We are busier than ever, often eat on the go and when we do have some down time we want to spend it eating foods we love, not spending hours in the kitchen preparing it. That is why I always recommend eggs.

“They are the perfect natural fuel for a busy lifestyle – full of protein, vitamins and minerals and quick to cook.”

Bord Bia’s Teresa Brophy said buying half a dozen eggs is the favourite among consumers.

She said: “They still hold the largest share of the category followed by dozen packs.

“By choosing eggs with the Quality Mark, consumers can trust that they have been produced to the highest Bord Bia standards which are verified at every stage.”
