Dracula fans plan huge gathering

- BY AAKANKSHA SURVE

IRISH Dracula fans are hoping to break the world record for the largest gathering of vampires in one place.

Hundreds of people dressed as the notorious Count will congregate outside the Sean Mcdermott Street Church, Dublin, on October 23.

The current world record was set in Doswell, Virginia, US, where 1,039 enthusiasts gathered in September 2011.

Irish horror fans will be hoping to stake a claim for the record as a part of The Big Scream Halloween Community Festival in Dublin’s North East Inner City.

Festival director Yetti Redmond said: “The author of Dracula, Bram Stoker, lived near where we’ll gather.

“He lived here for longer than anywhere else in Dublin. This is a little known fact. So we felt that this event would be an interesting way to highlight our famous former resident.

“While people are here, we’ll encourage them to take a selfie at the Dracula mural outside the Bram Stoker house.”

Yetti added it will be an event for the whole family with live music, face painting, treats, and spare capes as well as a fire engine for all the little monsters.

He said: “Hopefully, this is something that will capture people’s imaginations and that there will be a big turnout.

“Apart from Dracula, we will have Dublin GAA hero Michael Darragh Macauley, so we know that it will be a great atmosphere for all the family.”

The festival, which will run from October 22 to 31, will offer a variety of fun events including horror movie screenings and gothic torchlit tours.

There will also be craft workshops, dress-up bingo with Count Dracula, and a doggie costume competition.
