Rugby league Wembley winner is now tackling blazes Down Under Tributes for owner of NY’S oldest Irish bar Mcsorley’s

A FORMER rugby league star in England is helping to tackle the Australian bush fires.

Trent Waterhouse, who won the Challenge Cup with Warrington at Wembley, is now a firefighte­r in Sydney.

The 39-year-old returned to his homeland in 2014 and joined the service in Sydney in 2018.

He has been fighting the blazes which have killed at least 28 people since

September and destroyed more than 2,600 homes and 25.5 million acres, mainly in New South Wales.

Around 500 million animals are believed to have perished, including koalas, kangaroos, cows and wallabies. Trent said: “I’ve never seen anything like it. It can get pretty hairy when you are close to the fires. “But I love the job. The camaraderi­e with the boys is great and just the same as that on the pitch with rugby teams.”

Last week Warrington unveiled a limited edition training shirt in support of the Australian Red Cross. Trent said: “It’s very touching.”

The club’s chief executive Karl Fitzpatric­k said: “It’s a country we have such a close affinity with.”

STAFF were left terrified after an armed robber held up a bookies.

The incident happened at a Ladbrokes shop in Baldoyle, North Dublin, on Wednesday evening.

The man is believed to have tried to take a sum of cash when staff were closing the shop at 6.30pm.

A Garda spokesman said: “A man entered the premises with what’s believed to be a firearm and threatened staff.

Threecastl­es, Co Kilkenny, and owned the famous New York institutio­n Mcsorley’s for more than 50 years. He passed away from lung cancer at the age of 80 last weekend. Matty was married to Teresa Mary Brady and had five children.

Paying tribute at his funeral his daughter Andrea said: “Nothing ever held him down. He saw good in any situation.”
