THE Argentine Ambassador to Ireland is to be buried in a village here with a special link to her native country.

Laura Bernal, who passed away in her Dublin home on April 26, will be laid to rest in Foxford, Co Mayo, tomorrow.

She visited the village several times as it was the birthplace of the founder of Argentina’s Navy, Admiral William Brown.

The envoy, who was in her 60s, highlighted links between the countries and regularly spoke to Foxford’s Admiral Brown Society.

A spokesman said: “Ambassador Bernal had a great affection for Foxford and we are honoured her family have chosen our area as her final resting place.”

A MAN accused of killing his 10-month-old grandson while he was babysitting has been refused bail.

Sean Wang died on August 15 last year after spending two days in intensive care following an alleged fatal injury.

His grandfather Chan Cheng Wang, 54, a Chinese national, was charged last Friday with manslaughter.

Det Garda Siobhan Tolan said she objected to the bail due to the seriousness of the case and fears of flight risk.

But she agreed the accused was co-operative when he was interviewed and he had come to a Garda station voluntarily.

Pleading for bail, defence solicitor Tracy Horan said it was a very sad case but Wang denies the charge.

He had come to Ireland last year to be with his son, who works as a chef, and his wife and grandson.

Wang had also lived with them at Melville Rise, Finglas, North Dublin.

The accused’s son and daughter-inlaw had come to Cloverhill District

Court offering to stand bail. Ms Horan said her client has insisted the child died from a fall and his family accepted that.

She argued it would be difficult for him to leave the country and strict conditions could be imposed.

Judge David Mchugh said it was a very sad case but noted the accused had no ties to the jurisdiction.

He denied bail and Wang was remanded in custody to appear again next week. The accused did not address the court and listened to proceedings with the help on an interpreter.

Det Garda Tolan said the DPP directed trial on indictment in the circuit court.

At Wang’s first hearing on Friday, she added he was minding the baby while his parents were out with friends.

It was alleged at 12.38am on August 13 “Sean arrived at Temple Street Children’s Hospital in cardiac arrest”.

He was accompanied by his parents and medical staff performed CPR 40 times before a heartbeat was detected.

A book of evidence has yet to be completed by the DPP for his trial.
