Women’s close shave for pal’s cancer battle

- BY SARAH SLATER

FRIENDS of a new mum who beat Covid-19 but who is now battling a brain tumour have raised almost €42,000 in 26 hours.

Shannon O’neill, Kelly-ann Whelan and Laura Bolger are to shave their heads next month to raise more money for Chloe Kavanagh, husband Ian and baby son Sam.

Chloe, 30, from Co Kilkenny was just 20 weeks pregnant last November when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Last December she had surgery while still pregnant but doctors in Beaumont Hospital could not take the cancer away completely.

She needs radiotherapy and chemotherapy to stop the disease progressing.

However, the main priority at the time was ensuring the safe delivery of her baby and on March 2 she gave birth to Sam, six weeks early.

Shannon said: Chloe “Two weeks after Kavanagh

Sam was born Chloe had to leave him to begin six weeks of radiotherapy. During this time she was dealt another blow when she tested positive for Covid-19.

“However, being the amazing fighter she is she beat the virus and was able to continue radiotherapy.

“Chloe is just the most inspiring and amazing friend. She’s been such a major part in all our lives and this is just a very small way for us to ease any financial burden.

“This is just our very small way of helping towards allowing this quality time for them all and we would greatly appreciate any kind of donation big or small.

“All the money raised will go directly to our Chloe, Ian and Sam.” ■■Donations can be made to gofundme.com/cut it for Chloe.
