Brogan: I’d play ball in heartbeat

- BY KEVIN TAYLOR

FORMER Dublin star Bernard Brogan can’t understand opposition to GAA matches being held behind closed doors.

The former Sky Blues sharpshooter, 36, took to Twitter last night to explain his viewpoint on the potential resumption of action – saying: “I would take your hand off to represent my county again.”

Brogan – who retired last year after Dublin completed the five in a row – tweeted: “This playing behind closed doors debate is baffling me!

“Fans are obviously amazing and I loved every drop of atmosphere they created but I would take your hand off to represent my county again, spectators or not!

“We play because we love the game end of, Am I missing something?”

The view from GAA president John Horan is that matches will not return while social distancing measures remain in place amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Horan has received a mixed reaction to the stance that he explained on RTE’S The Sunday Game two weeks ago.

His position is that the safety of the players and those associated with the GAA is the first priority, rather than the restart of Gaelic games.

Horan said: “If social distancing is a priority to deal with this pandemic, I don’t know how we can play a contact sport, and that is what Gaelic games is, a contact sport.”

“Professional sport is in a different league because they don’t go back into work and can be cocooned in a family situation.

“We can’t do that and won’t. I think people’s health and safety is the key to it all.”
