Forget season amid pandemic

- BY PAT NOLAN

THE GAA should abandon any plans to stage a Championship this year, says Boidu Sayeh.

In a NON-COVID world, Sayeh would be preparing to play against Dublin in the Leinster Championship this weekend, the champions’ first assignment of their six-ina-row quest.

The fact that the game was fixed for Tullamore (right) rather than Mullingar was a source of irritation for Sayeh and his teammates.

“It was really annoying,” he says. “Even with the Dublin lads, they wouldn’t even mind coming down to Cusack Park.

“A lot of lads were getting annoyed about that. We really wanted to push having it in Mullingar.

“If we have it in Mullingar, we’re playing Dublin, it’d even feel like we’d have a bit of hope for ourselves as well.”

For now, the possibility of playing that game next October remains, albeit a faint one, and the 24-year-old believes a line should just be drawn under the 2020 season.

“Ah, it’s pretty distant on the horizon now for me, to be honest,” he admits. “I can’t really see anything happening.

“Everything’s been eased off slowly and it’s a lot slower than I think anyone expected as well so I can’t see it even being back in October. I’d love to see it happening but I can’t.

“For the safety of everyone I think they should probably just scratch it, just leave it off.

“I would love to see the club coming back first if anything. There’s obviously less crowds, it’s not going to be as hectic but no, if I could choose, I’d just rather it be scratched and start it again.”
