MEMBERS of the public relied heavily on the bravery of the RNLI and Irish Coast Guard as the sun shone over the Bank Holiday weekend.

In Howth, Co Dublin, 12 people were rescued between Saturday and Monday.

They included four people stranded by the tide on rocks in Balscadden Bay on Sunday and three family members on a speed boat that had mechanical problems. It drifted on to Sutton Strand on Monday. Then later that evening, five people were left stranded by the tide at the Baldoyle Estuary.

Noel Davidson of Howth RNLI said: “Our volunteer lifeboat crew are always ready to respond to a call for help and have launched 13 times in the last 20 days. “Thankfully, while some of the call-outs proved to be false alarms with good intent, this Bank Holiday the RNLI were able to rescue 12 people

Irish Coast Guard call-outs. All were brought to safety from situations that could have been quite serious.

“Always check the tide times and conditions before you set off, be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on the tide direction.

“Ask for local advice and look out for safety signs.

“Always carry a means

of calling for help and know to call 112 or 999 if you or someone else is at risk.”

In two other incidents on Monday, the Dun Laoghaire branch of the Irish Coast Guard had to assist the National Ambulance Service.

The first call-out was to West Pier, where a person injured themselves while walking.

And in Killiney, they had to help with the stretcher lift of a patient from White Rock.

SOME well-needed rain is set to fall today as the country cools down after a sizzling week.

The temperature will drop to the mid-teens in most places with a few areas expected to see 20C maximum.

A Met Eireann forecaster said yesterday: “It will be blustery and cloudy to start, with showers in the east and southeast clearing through the morning.

“Brighter conditions in the northwest will spread to all areas during the day with some sunny spells.

“Temperatures will struggle to get to 12C to 14C in the northwest with highs of 15C to 20C elsewhere.”
