Two men held over attacks to the Luke Kelly statue

Guild Street have arrested two men in relation to separate incidents of criminal damage on the statue.

“It has been damaged a number of times and these arrests refer to the damage of January and March.”

Local councillor Christy Burke, who was instrument­al in having the statue dedicated to the much loved artist who died aged just 43 in 1984, slammed those responsibl­e.

He said: “To the culprits that’s doing this, you’ll never destroy Luke’s legacy.

my request will again clean Luke first thing in the morning. Grow up and get a grip.”

After the damage was cleared up on Saturday morning, locals called for the statue to be protected by CCTV to deter future attacks.

TWO men have been arrested in connection with two separate attacks on a Luke Kelly statue.

They come just days after the monument to The Dubliners singer on Sheriff Street in the capital was vandalised for the fifth time in 18 months on Friday night.

A pair of glasses were drawn on the face of the statue and “F**k Luke Kelly” was scrawled in red.

Gardai confirmed to the Irish Mirror the arrests were not connected to this incident but to attacks on another statue dedicated to the singer and banjo player in Guild Street in January and March.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutio­ns in relation to the arrests with enquiries continuing on the other incidents, including the latest on Friday night.
