ELAINE Crowley revealed she has come off Twitter due to an onslaught of nasty comments.

The host of Virgin Media’s The Elaine Show has been open about her battle with mental health in the past.

She said: “I didn’t want to expose myself to that.”

Talking about her decision to take a step back from social media earlier this year, Elaine, 42, said: “It is complete selfpreservation. Some people can be so nasty and mean and

I didn’t want to expose myself to that anymore.

“I’d had enough and comments hurt.

I went on to Twitter for a day and came straight off it because the most horrible comments were coming in about the show, from educated people who then tag you and think it is OK.

“I was just over it. You don’t have to put up with that. I don’t need to be on social media and it was so liberating cutting it off.

“I have way more time on my hands. People need to be held accountable for what they write and say. I am back on Instagram as it is just a nicer platform.”

The TV star has been battling the weighing scales for years and recently opened up about her discovery of a hormonal imbalance.

But hopeful that people will stop focusing on her fluctuating weight, she said: “You can get sick of the same thing all the time”.

Speaking to RSVP magazine, she added: “I have had a 20-year career in television so it would be nice for the narrative to change a little.”

The Cork native has been separated from her relatives throughout lockdown as she continues to present her daily show in Dublin.

And while she longs to see her family and hug them for the first time when restrictions lift, she said she still worries about her mother Mary – who is battling cancer – being exposed to Covid-19.

She added: “At least if you are from a city, you can sit in your parents’ garden or walk to their house but this has been tough.

“I am finding it very hard now as it has been so long.”
