Troubled cop’s chilling finale

-

BBC2, 9pm

BASED on the novels of writer Giles Blunt, this gripping thriller sees detectives solve crimes in the frozen depths of Canada.

Detective John Cardinal (Billy Campbell) and his partner Detective Lise Delorme (Karine Vanasse) investigate grisly cases in the fictional city of Algonquin Bay.

But the gory murders aside, much of the chilling atmosphere derives from the imposing snowy white scenery of the Canadian winter.

It’s the sort of place where you might have a nightmare that you’re desperately trying to free someone who is trapped in a car frozen over on an icy plateau.

Which is exactly what is happening to Cardinal as this series begins.

He’s also being quite cagey with his daughter, but fans will already know that he is officially ‘troubled’.

This is the fourth and final series, which adapts the sixth of Blunt’s novels. It follows the case of a local crown prosecutor, Robert, who has gone missing.

His wife is worried because he failed to turn up at a hearing – something he’s never done. Something must be terribly wrong...

Cardinal and Delorme are called in, where they start with Robert’s date with another woman at a hotel. “We have an open marriage,” says his wife.

But with his wallet, keys and clothes abandoned at the hotel, it’s not looking good.

Meanwhile, Delorme has been awaiting news of a transfer and finds out she has got the job - but when will she go? And how will the news affect Cardinal?

It’s hard to imagine he could be any sadder...
