Black lives matter & more people need to come out and say it!

EX-IRISH STRIKER MORRISON HAILS DORTMUND ACE SANCHO FOR HIS STAND AGAINST RACISM

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

CLINTON MORRISON has hailed football’s global stars for highlighting the ‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign.

The former Ireland striker yesterday branded the racial tension across America a ‘disgrace’.

And he insists he would have ‘put a message out there for the whole world to see’ if he was still playing.

Morrison (right) was angered and upset by the killing of George

Floyd in Minneapolis last week.

An unarmed black man, Floyd died while being restrained by a white police officer who pressed his knee onto Floyd’s neck for several minutes.

Widespread unrest is continuing across America in the wake of the shocking incident, sparking a worldwide reaction.

Borussia Dortmund and England star Jadon Sancho was booked at the weekend for revealing a T-shirt that read “Justice for George Floyd”.

He was among a host of Bundesliga stars to show messages of support for the campaign.

And players at various Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester and

Newcastle, were pictured taking a knee in training in their show of solidarity.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino this week assured players that they won’t face sanctions for their stance.

Their actions “deserve an applause and not a punishment,” he said, while also urging all national associations to apply ‘common sense surrounding the events”.

Ex-republic of Ireland star Morrison, 41, said yesterday that he was ‘boiling’ over the dramatic chain of events in America.

Capped 36 times by the Boys in Green between 2001 and 2006, Morrison said: “Why can’t these players like Jadon Sancho go on the pitch and say, ‘Black Lives Matter’?

“Because they do matter, this does matter. And I commend the FA for saying they are not going to punish players if they protest.

“It’s common sense. If you look in Germany they’re saying it’s politically not right, but I don’t care.

“If I was still playing now I would be saying, ‘you can fine me, you can ban me, but I don’t care, I’d put a message out there for the whole world to see.’”

The former Crystal Palace and

Birmingham City ace told TALKSPORT: “I want justice for George Floyd.

“It’s a disgrace what happened to him and to other people who have been killed out there, it’s not right.

“It’s about making stand and doing whatever it takes to make people understand that black lives do matter.

“We are the same as everyone else. Why are we different? We are all human beings and we all bleed the same.”

And

Morrison added:

“What’s happening in America is an absolute disgrace and we have to talk about it.

“But why in 2020 are we only starting to talk about it and people are listening?

This has been going on for years and years.”
