AMID the panic and terror as the Titanic disaster unfolded, Harold Lowe’s calmness and courage saved numerous lives.

Now, 108 years later, a stunning archive of his possessions is being sold by his family and is expected to fetch around €70,000.

He helped scores of women and children into lifeboats and was the only Titanic officer to go back to rescue people. The archive includes a telescope given to him by a survivor who had it inscribed: “To Harold G. Lowe... The Real Hero of the Titanic.”

There is also his officer’s whistle that he may have used on board the sinking liner to organise passengers into lifeboats.

Harold, 29 at the time, was Fifth Officer on the ship. His calm authority came to the fore as he got people to safety after it struck an iceberg in the Atlantic in 1912.

He left on a lifeboat but returned to the wreck site to save those who were still alive in the freezing water.

His heroism was featured in the 1997 movie Titanic. Harold was played by fellow Welshman Ioan Gruffudd and was portrayed in the film as saving Kate Winslet’s character Rose.

The archive going on sale includes a watercolour Harold painted of the liner, and a very rare photo of all the officers on the RMS Carpathia, the ship that

Ioan playing him in film. Above, Harold’s whistle rescued the Titanic survivors from the lifeboats hours after disaster struck.

There is also Harold’s certificate of competency as a master of a ship. The document replaced the one that was lost on the liner when it sank.

The archive is being sold through Henry Aldridge and Son of Devizes, Wilts. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: “These items have never been seen or auctioned before. Harold is venerated by the Titanic community as the officer who went back.”

Harold, born in Llanrhos, Carnarvonshire, in 1882, remained a sailor after the disaster that killed 1,500 people. He died in 1944 aged 61.
