their hosts. Since the resumption, half of the games have been won by the visitors, while in only 12 of the 56 matches have the home side triumphed.

It is a phenomenon Arteta (with Pep Guardiola, below) has been monitoring closely.

“I watched some aspects which I think you can take advantage of,” he said. “But I think you need to experience it.

“When there is no crowd and you can’t feel the energy, that push and the drive, the game is different. The intensity drops a little bit and the physical state of the players is not what it was three months ago.

“We have to take every game the same way, to go there and win the game. We know every stadium is completely different. I have to focus and try to convince my players to focus on what we have to do.

FROM BACK PAGE striker, who even reported Souness to the PFA over his treatment, claims he’s out of touch with the modern game because his thinking is so old-fashioned.

“Back then, Graeme was a bully,” said Cole. “And I was basically saying to Graeme, ‘Bullying don’t work’.

“He was an unbelievable midfield player back in his day, but when a man is set in his way, he looks at the game totally different to what it is now. And that is him.”
