GERS GO SPACK TO FUTURE..

-

NIGEL SPACKMAN insists Rangers are right to invest in the future as Steven Gerrard looks to snap up cheap young talent with potential to sell for big profits.

But the man (inset) who skippered the club to the title 29 years ago reckons future investment will only be valuable for Gerrard and director of football Ross Wilson if they supplement it with seasoned professionals.

Spackman said: “It’s not just about the future it’s about the present. Getting that balance right between bringing in young talent who you think can have a real future and potentially attract a big fee at a later date and having good senior pros at your club to nurture that talent along.

“Next season Ibrox is going to be very tense with Celtic going for 10 in a row. It’s going to be a tough place for youngsters coming in.

“Hopefully they will be good enough to fulfil their potential in that first season. But they’ll need help. Steven (top) knows himself what he needs. He needs a blend of hungry young players and pros who you know you can trust week in, week out.

“It’s going to be a pressurised atmosphere and you need to be able to handle that. That’s where the good pros come in.

“You already have Steven Davis, Allan Mcgregor and Jermain Defoe and along with Steven Gerrard and Gary Mcallister to bring them out of themselves and help them grow.

“But Steven might feel he needs more of that. You need winners, players who even hate losing at training. That’s the thing that’s hard in the modern game.”
