The Queen of Soul

Aretha became known as the Queen of Soul due to the power and emotion of her amazing voice in hits such as I Say A Little Prayer, Think and A Natural Woman.

Barack Obama said of her: “American history wells up when Aretha sings.

“That is why, when she sits down at a piano and sings A Natural Woman, she can move me to tears.”

In 1967 Aretha moved from the Columbia record label to Atlantic.

She was helped to stardom by producer Jerry Wexler, with whom she recorded some of her biggest hits. Otis Redding wrote Respect and was the first to record it, but on hearing Aretha’s version he joked, “I just lost my song.”

Aretha said: “People want respect – even babies. As people, we deserve respect from one another.”

ELLIE Goulding says she’ll have to rebuild her stage confidence before singing live again – as she’s become shy during lockdown.

The pop star, 33, is releasing her fourth album, Brightest Blue, next month and plans to tour next spring.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, she said: “I can’t imagine performing on stage now. I watched my Glastonbury performance and can’t believe I did that in front of all those people.

“There is a misconception that if you’re a performer, you must be a very confident, extrovert person but actually I’m the complete opposite.

“I’ve spent a lot of time by myself recently and I’m going to have to build my confidence back up again for when I go back on tour.”
