1919: Jack Dempsey beat Jess Willard to become the new world heavyweigh­t champion.

Helen Wills-moody won her eighth Wimbledon title on the same day another Centre Court heroine, Suzanne Lenglen of France, died of leukaemia. She was 39 and won 15 titles between 1919 and 1925, six of them at Wimbledon.

1969: Ann Jones finally won her first Wimbledon crown after 13 previous attempts, beating Billie Jean King 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
