KAREN Koster has revealed she almost quit Ireland AM in her first few months – admitting she couldn’t cope with the 4am starts.

The former Xpose presenter, who first joined the morning show to fill in for Ciara Doherty’s maternity leave, also said she found keeping up with the news stressful.

The mum of three added: “When they first got me in to cover Ciara’s job as the anchor, that was hard. You really had to be on top of news, reading all your newspapers, and I was getting up at 4.20am.

“And after a few weeks of it, I thought I can’t do this any more, I’m going to have to throw in the towel and walk away.

“I could not survive those early starts with three young kids in the house.

“Eve hadn’t even turned one at that stage. I would be dizzy going to collect the kids at the end of the day.”

The Virgin Media host told the RTE Guide how the shock axing of Xpose helped her stick it out.

She said: “I knew it was just a maternity cover and that once Ciara was back I could go back to Xpose, but then that was cancelled so I knew I’d have to make it work.”

The 39-year-old, who has been working from home during lockdown, added things have been much better now that her colleague and friend Ciara is back.

She said: “It was almost like I could stop trying to be like she was, she’s so good at her job and naturally a news junkie whereas I wasn’t.

“I was probably trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The job was getting the best of me to be honest and I was horrible then at home with the kids.”

A JACKPOT winner made contact with National Lottery HQ yesterday to confirm they had scooped €2.8million.

The player bought the ticket in Murphy’s Newsagents on Main Street in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, last Wednesday.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We are really excited to have spoken to the seventh Lotto jackpot winner of the year and now arrangements are being made for this claim to be made.”
