PIERS Morgan says Kate Garraway’s husband is still far from being well, despite signs of improvement after three months in an induced coma in intensive care with coronavirus.

The Mirror told yesterday how Good Morning Britain presenter Kate, 53, had hopes of a breakthrough in her husband Derek Draper’s condition after he opened his eyes in hospital.

But her fellow GMB host Piers said it is much too soon to suggest that Derek, 52, has made a complete recovery.

He told viewers: “It’s premature at the moment to think that Derek is in any way out of the woods, sadly, and he remains in a very serious critical condition.”

Kate’s representatives also played down how much Derek had improved, saying: “We hope, as does Kate, that there will be more evidence of a recovery. But it will be a very slow and uncertain path.”

Piers said Kate will appear on the ITV breakfast show tomorrow, when she will talk about Derek’s condition and her own return to work.

We also told yesterday how Kate is planning to get back to the GMB sofa as she strives to create as normal a routine as possible for children Darcey, 14, and William, 10.

It is thought she could return to GMB as soon as next week to help fill the gap as Piers and co-host Susanna Reid take a summer break from the show after tomorrow until September.

Piers said yesterday: “We’re going to talk to Kate on Wednesday before we go off for the summer. She’s going to have something more to say about this.”

Kate told Hello! magazine that Derek had responded by opening his eyes when spoken to by medics, and said she and the children spoke to him every day via Facetime, with a nurse holding his ipad.

But she added: “The doctors have warned his condition could persist for years so I have to get on with life whilst we are waiting for him to get better.

“Billy starts secondary school in September, but Derek’s doctors say he won’t be out of hospital by then. My priority is to make the children feel safe, not to let them see me feeling vulnerable in the world where Derek was my rock.”

We hope for more evidence of a recovery but it will be a very slow and uncertain path REPRESENTATIVES FOR KATE
