Farke: It’s not doom and gloom

DANIEL FARKE rates Norwich’s season a success even though they will be playing Championship football next season.

The Canaries have lost all five games after lockdown and defeat by West Ham will confirm relegation after one term back in the top flight.

But their German coach insists it is far from doom and gloom at Carrow Road. Norwich have been praised for their football and while a lack of investment has ultimately cost them, Farke believes the future is bright.

“Of course, you have to be self-critical if you finish bottom of the table and we’re not dancing on any tables,” he said. “We’re disappointed we could not work a miracle.

“It doesn’t help us in the shortterm and when the dust is settled, we will judge realistically what went wrong.

“But this club definitely made the right choice in not falling for temptation.

“When you go up, it is always tempting to spend a lot of money and bring in more quality to help such a young group of players. This club has done that in the past and it has led to difficult situations.

“When Stuart Webber and I came here, if we hadn’t sold James Maddison to Leicester, I don’t think there would have been a club.

“But this year, we developed a plan to keep the club running and we have paid for the sins of the past.

“We have been able to invest in our training ground and improve facilities at the stadium so, for the medium and long-term future, this season has been a success. And of course, that is not to forget the wonderful experience we’ve all had.”

Farke accepts that even if Norwich beat the Hammers and win their remaining fixtures, survival is beyond them.

DEFEAT today will see Norwich relegated from the Premier League for the fifth time since 1992-93 – more than any other side.

But he does not expect a major upheaval in the close-season.

“I don’t expect 20 in and 20 out,” he added. “I want us to retain as much quality as we possibly can.

“No player has been in my office to say they don’t want to be here and I don’t expect them to. This club has given them trust, backing and no one forced them to sign longterm contracts.”
