Drogs get teeth into title drive

- BY PAUL BUTTNER

HAVING lost out in each of the last two years, the playoffs are something Drogheda striker Chris Lyons would ideally like to avoid for a third time.

Tuesday night’s big 3- 1 win away to Galway United opened the door of a title opportunity a little wider.

Having all but ended Galway’s play- off aspirations, Drogheda will be now hoping for a favour from the Tribesmen who visit Bray tomorrow afternoon while they must do their own business when hosting Wexford.

That scenario would then leave Drogheda, who have the better goal difference, going for the title and automatic promotion come Tuesday’s visit to

Cabinteely while Bray travel to Athlone.

“It was a great win,” said

Lyons, 27, of the midweek victory out west.

“It’s been a frustrating few weeks, losing to Athlone and then games being cancelled due to Covid. But Tim [ Clancy] has just told us to go out and enjoy our football and see what happens.

“We’re not thinking of the title as Bray have it in their hands.

“It would be great if Galway could upset them, but Bray are a good side who have played well all year.”

All Drogheda can control is ensuring they beat Wexford. Lyons added: “That’s our focus. Get the result tomorrow and see what happens from then.

“We just have to win tomorrow and bring it into the last game and then think about whether it’s the play- offs or going for the league title.”

FIXTURES: Tomorrow ( 3.0) Bray Wanderers v Galway United. Drogheda United v Wexford
