Legend leaves Cats but isn’t in running for Barrowside­rs role

DJ CAREY is not in the running for the vacant Carlow hurling managerial post.

Care y, 5 0 , was st r ongly linked with the role last week after it emerged that he was leaving the Kilkenny backroom team after only one year.

23rd season.

All- Ireland winning m a n a g e r g u i d e d the county to a 16th 6th Leinster title in 2020, although Ki l kenny went out of t he Championsh­ip to Waterford in the All- Ireland semi- finals.

James Mcgarry and Martin Comerford are to continue as Cody’s selectors, with Michael Comer f o r d st ay i ng o n a s stren g t h and c onditionin­g coach.

However Carey will not be continuing and, in a statement, Kilkenny GAA chiefs wished the Cats legend “all the best for the future”, while thanking him for his contributi­on over the last number of years.

A l t h o u g h n o t c commenting on his d e p a r t u r e f r o m Co Cody ’s set- up, i t i s unde understood that Carey is not in the frame to succeed Colm Bonnar as manager in Carlow.

C a r e y ’ s l i n k t o t h e Barrowside­rs comes from his past role with IT Carlow, where he worked with many of the Carlow panel, and he could return to the helm there this year.

Carr is a former Ti p p Al l - I r e l a n d winning captain who a l s o g ui d e d t h e c o u nty ’s under- 21 hurlers to All- Ireland success in the past.

He is expected to succeed Shane Ronayne i n the role early next week.

Royayne was confirmed as the Waterford footballer­s’ new boss on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Derek Lyng will remain as Kilkenny under- 20 manager, with Peter Barry and Michael Rice in tandem as his selectors.

Richie Mulrooney will be in charge of the Cats’ under- 17 team.
