MOYES: TOP SIX IS NOW IRONS’ GOAL

- BY DARREN LEWIS

DAVID MOYES has told his West Ham players not to settle for their current Premier League position.

The Hammers are two points off the Champions League places, with Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over West Brom making it four wins on the spin.

But Moyes believes his seventhplaced side are still only scratching the surface of their potential and reckons they can upset the top six come the end of the season.

Irons boss Moyes said: “I want our players not to see this as where we should be – I want us to be at the top. With the standards we have set ourselves, we want to do far better.

“I want us to be humble. I want the players to prove to me that it isn’t just half the season.

“I want the players to prove we can be here right to the end.

“We were quiet in the dressing room after the West Brom game because we were not happy with the way we played.

“Don’t get me wrong, the players are doing a great job. But I don’t want us to be a flash in the pan and fall away.”

Moyes (right) is looking to sign a striker this month to support frontman Michail Antonio, who scored his second in as many games to underline his importance to the side.

Bournemouth striker Josh King, Sevilla’s Youssef En-nesyri and Reims frontman Boulaye Dia are among a string of candidates.

But Moyes maintained that his delay in replacing flop striker Sebastian Haller, who joined Ajax this month, has nothing to do with a lack of full backing from the club’s board.

He added: “The board have backed me greatly since I have been here with anything I have asked for.

“But I also know that I am not someone who is going to go and ask for money in a period of time in football where wages can’t be paid.

“We see the NHS has been struggling and we have so many difficulties outside football.

“We love football and do I want a top striker? I certainly do, I really do to help us.

“But I am also mindful that football clubs – a lot of them – are on the verge of going bust and I have got to make sure that I do things correctly.”
