THE Star Spangled Banner flew proudly over the Wee County yesterday as “Cousin Joe” Biden became the 46th President of the United States.

His relatives in Co Louth had an American-themed party to watch the inauguration ceremony

– complete with cheeseburgers, hot dogs and French fries and Bruce Springsteen on the stereo.

Distant cousin Andrea Mckevitt said: “It’s really huge for our family, we are so proud and have a real sense of pride that one of our own, whose ancestors hail from the Wee county, is in the biggest office in the world.”

Along with parents

Veronica and Martin and her sister Ciara, Andrea watched watching the inauguration from her home in the Wee County’s Cooley Peninsula.

She said: “There is a euphoria in the air. We will be Zooming to the rest of the clan and bursting with pride watching Cousin Joe being sworn into office.”

She said his election had brought “excitement and joy to our area and it has been truly wonderful in what can only be described as a dark time not just for our locality but Ireland as a whole”.

Andrea, who is a Louth County Councillor: “I fully believe that Joe will be a President who will reunite a politically and socially divided United States, a country which hasn’t seen unrest like this since the Vietnam war.

“He will be a president for all US citizens not just those who voted for him and I believe this is a welcome change on the world stage in terms of leaders at the top table.

“Joe has a strong affinity to Ireland and I think that was clear in his commitment to our country through the Brexit talks and his dedication to the Good Friday Agreement. There is no word on a visit just yet but we’re hopeful 2021 will see the return of Cousin Joe to the Peninsula and there is no doubt that we will all be ready and waiting for him whenever he wishes to make a return visit.”

Meanwhile, the American flag flew alongside the tricolour outside Louth County Council’s headquarters in Dundalk to mark the day. It was done at the request of the chairperson of Dundalk Municipal District, Cllr
