Prison staff on sick after Thompson threats
PRISON officers had to sick leave over “stress” caused by vile threats made by mobster “Fat” Freddie Thompson, it has emerged.
Staff in Portlaoise Prison were targeted by the notorious gangland killer in the past two years.
A source said: “Thompson has been throwing his weight around ever since he came into Portlaoise. He believes himself to be better and bigger than everyone else and sees no problem threatening prison officers and making their lives hell.
“People are in there trying to do their job, and they know it comes with the territory to get abuse.
“He will say anything to try and get into people’s heads. It’s caused a lot of lads a lot of stress.” Prison bosses launched an inquiry into the threats and the Kinahan-cartel thug was punished including a spell in 23-hour a day solitary confinement.
However, sources say the toll on prison staff remains – and some have considered asking to be transferred.
A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service said it cannot comment. The development comes after it was revealed in February how Thompson, who is a key associate of Daniel Kinahan’s criminal empire, smeared faeces around his cell in a dirty protest.
Sources also told of how the mobster, who is serving a life sentence for the gangland murder of Daithi Douglas in 2016, has “completely lost it” behind bars.
A source said: “He’s acting insane for the last while and his actions are landing him in big trouble.”
