Kane mourns death of Irish grand-uncle

Irish grand-uncle of skipper Harry dies before semi

A MAJOR policy split has developed within the Government – over who to support in the Euros final.

Yesterday morning Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar made his feelings clear in a not-so-subtle social media post.

Alongside a photo of himself sitting in front of an Italian-flagged pizza box, the Tanaiste wrote: “Enjoying a delicious cup of Italian coffee at the Il Fornaio Italian cafe on Dawson Street.” It’s like Little Italy here.”

A short while later, Taoiseach Micheal Martin announced he was firmly in the English camp, announcing: “I wish our neighbours the very best of success.”

Irish grand-uncle of Harry Kane died ahead of England’s win over Denmark, it has emerged.

Paudge Kane passed away in hospital in Galway on Monday after a short illness, but the news was kept low-key to avoid disrupting his grand-nephew’s preparation for Wednesday’s semi-final.

It is understood the England skipper knew about the death before he led England to victory against the Danes.

His father Pat and Harry would have been very close to Paudge and his dad would come home from London to see all his relations in the close-knit Irishspeaking village of Letteran frack, Connemara, three or four times a year.

Harry spent time with all the family in Connemara every summer as a child growing up. A local source said: “The Kane family are lovely people and all very close.

“They are all very proud of what Harry has achieved and know he will be saddened and upset that his granduncle has passed away.”
