Q

AAI have just had some thermo caulk silicone render applied to a wall, but it’s been spilt on my block paving. How can l remove it? Bert Johnson, by email

I use silicone render all the time and protection is key. If it gets on a hard surface, clean it with water and a stiff bristle brush within a couple of hours of the stain occurring. You could try power-washing too as the pressure might lift the stain. If this does not work then you need to use an acid wash. Q

Can you advise me on cleaning Yorkshire stone? It’s a clock carved by my great-great grandfather. I’ve just had the clock repaired but the surround lets it down. Laureen Glossop, by email Yorkshire stone is a sandstone so you need a suitable cleaner. Use Lithofin WEXA which dissolves and removes grease and oil deposits and dirt. It is a mild alkaline so does not harm the stone. You can then maintain it using Lithofin MN Wash & Clean or Easy Care.

DONNY’S TOP TIP

When plastering over a hole in a solid wall or plaster lath wall, always apply diluted PVA to prevent the dry wall from pulling out the moisture from the plaster which will cause it to fall off.

QMy summerhouse was varnished dark brown seven years ago. Two years ago I painted over it in cream. But now the paint has started to blister and peel and the brown varnish has come through. What can I do?

Jo, Petts Wood, Kent

A

It’s probably water trapped behind the paint which expands when its a hot day forming a blister. Peel and sand or use a heat gun to remove the blisters and then apply an acrylic paint. The hardest part will be preparation.

Q

What’s the best way to cover red gloss paint on kitchen walls? Margaret Deans, by email

A

Try Zinsser Cover Stain. It has hiding powers and you can re-coat within two hours. It also works on nicotine, water and greasy stains.
