WHY ARE MY GIRLFRIEND’S PALS ALL MEN?

-

Dear Coleen

My girlfriend has lots of male friends. Well, actually, she has mostly male friends and I’m not used to this situation. I don’t want to seem clingy or unreasonable, but isn’t it weird that most of her mates are blokes?

I’m starting to get paranoid that she sees them as more than just friends or might even be hooking up with some of them.

I realise this might sound immature (I’m 27), but it’s the one thing that bothers me. Otherwise, our relationship is good.

I’d appreciate your views.

I can only speak from own experience and I always got on better with guys, especially when I was growing up. I was friends with all my brother’s mates and we’d all go out on a Friday night and, even now, I have male friends, but that’s all they are. So, your girlfriend might be just like me – I simply never liked hanging out with a big group of girls.

You must have seen her with these guys, so how does she behave? If she’s incredibly flirtatious with them, then that’s not good but, if she’s not, then I think you’re worrying for nothing. Your relationship is good, so unless she crosses the line of friendship with one of these mates, then you should trust that’s all they are.

Just because she’s with you, you can’t expect her to dump all her mates. But you might find that when her pals start to get serious partners, those friendships will start to take more of a back seat. Also, why not try to be mates with them?
