Who will be head chef?

-

ITV, 9pm

NOT another cooking contest! Except this one somehow feels fresh, with a jazzed up, late-night, chatshow vibe.

Firstly, the cream of the presenting crop have been put together – Emma Willis and Tom Allen make for a delightfully cheeky duo who will appeal to all generations.

There’s a thumping soundtrack whenever we meet a celebrity or a chef or anything dramatic happens.

Every single celeb has their own world-class chef to help them, resulting in a noisy chef’s table of critics.

And there’s the added drama of a big gold gong, or frying pan, which can be struck just once in a challenge to give the contestant two minutes of cheffing help.

The eight celebs hoping to battle through to win the show are comedian and actor Griff Rhys Jones, Strictly’s head judge Shirley Ballas, DJ and songwriter Naughty Boy, performer and presenter Denise van Outen, actress Catherine Tyldesley, Mcfly’s

Harry Judd, comedian and actor Johnny Vegas and TV presenter AJ Odudu.

Each is trained by a mentor chef before having an epic battle, then we head into blind judging, harsh criticism and eliminator cook-offs.

“It’s the ultimate showbiz food fight,” says Tom.

In tonight’s episode, Johnny faces Harry, then Shirley faces Naughty Boy.

“Put me in a kitchen and I am out of my depth,” says Shirley. While Johnny rants: “Cooking against someone is my idea of hell.”

Did no one brief him beforehand?

While they cook, the remaining celebs cheer and shout like a raucous studio audience.

And for the chefs – there’s blood (yes, really), sweat and tears.
