Crown stars shortlisted for best actress
THE Queen and Princess Di will face off at the Emmys after the Crown’s Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin were shortlisted for best actress.
Irish hopes had focused on Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan for her performance in Netflix’s Bridgerton and Brendan Gleeson who played Donald Trump in The Comey Rule.
However, they both missed out on nominations.
Kate Winslet, whose performance in Mare Of Easttown has been critically acclaimed, I May Destroy You writer and star Michaela Coel and The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-joy were also named in top categories.
Joining them as nominees were Hugh Grant for The Undoing and Paul Bettany for Wandavision.
The actors will be up against
Ewan Mcgregor, for his role in Halston, in the Outstanding Lead Actor In a Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie gong.
The Crown is favourite to finally win best drama for the show’s fourth season, with many of its actors garnering nominations.
Josh O’connor (Prince Charles, lead actor in a drama) Corrin (Princess
Diana, lead actress in a drama), Colman (Queen Elizabeth II, lead actress in a drama) and Gillian Anderson (Margaret Thatcher, supporting actress in a drama) were all nominated. They are joined by Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret, supporting actress in a drama), Emerald Fennell (Camilla Parker Bowles, supporting actress in a drama) and Tobias Menzies (Prince Philip, supporting actor in a drama).
Continuing the royal theme, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey is nominated for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series Or Special category.
Netflix’s Emily In Paris was given a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series. Mare Of Easttown, I May Destroy You, The Queen’s Gambit and The Underground Railroad were all named for Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie.
In terms of studios, three streaming series led the way, with Netflix’s The Crown and Disney’s Star Wars drama The Mandalorian each notching 24 nominations. Disney’s Marvel series Wandavision got 23 nominations. HBO led the networks with 130 nominations.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on September 10.
