KILLED Dean Maguire died in road crash

A SCREWDRIVER and a torch were among items brought to the altar to remember a convicted burglar at his funeral mass yesterday.

In one tribute paid to Dean Maguire during the ceremony, a woman said: “Sorry for the language father – rest in peace you f ***** g legend.”

The 29-year-old criminal died in a car crash with two others as they drove down the wrong side of the N7 after they fled gardai last week, smashing head-on into a truck.

The dad of two’s funeral mass took place at St Mary’s Priory church in Tallaght, South Dublin, yesterday.

Wreaths were laid at the altar with the words Daddy, babby, husband, son and mad man.

A poster remembering Maguire was also put up which read: “RIP Dean. You know the score, get on the floor, don’t be funny, give me the money.”

Symbols were brought to the altar remembering his life and they included a torch, a screwdriver, a reg plate, cigarettes, a lighter, his Canada Goose jacket and a bottle of Bulmers.

Others included his cap, phone, a memorial card for his brother, keys, sunglasses, Red Bull and scratch cards.

A woman said every memory she had of Maguire was “funny” and recalled the night of a christening.

CHARACTER

She added: “We were in a disco but you got so drunk you thought you were in a cul de sac. You really were a character.

“Sorry for the language father – rest in peace you f ***** g legend.”

A man also told how he was “lost without” him.

He said: “Every memory, we’re going to cherish for the mad and crazy you.

“Your little girls are going to grow up and never, ever forget you. That’s our promise brother.

“How could we let them down without telling them all about you? I’ll think of you after when I don’t know what to do, because you will help pull us through.

“We had some mad memories that will last my whole life that we put in the f*** it bucket and laugh the whole night through.

“I’m going to say goodbye. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Sleep easy, life will never be the same.”

Another man said: “I could write a book on the memories we have together, the good and the bad.

“I won’t mention them because you can’t get flipped but I could for most of them. You know the score brother.”

He added he will look out for Maguire’s wife and children before adding: “Your legacy will live on

forever. You will never be forgotten.” A note read out on behalf of Maguire’s sister-in-law who is in America, said: “If Paddy had an argument with someone, you would say ‘Paddy show me where they live until I go up and blow them off the map’.

“There will never be a day that you’re not thought of. Rest in peace. Your legacy will live on forever.”

Maguire’s sister told mourners: “To my brother, to my friend, you can’t choose your family so I was lucky to have a brother like you.

“We fussed, we teased, we had

fights, we had fun, and always in my heart I knew I would do anything for you. We forged a bond that time cannot erase and shared a secret smile the world will never understand. You can never know how proud I am to tell the world that’s my brother. But even prouder to say that’s my friend.

“Dean, my darling brother, I will always love you and miss you forever. Until we meet again.”

Earlier in the mass, the priest said there was “such sadness and heartbreak for all of his family”.

He told the mourners: “We think of his dear parents, his wife and children from whom he was taken so suddenly and quickly, without a chance to say goodbye.

“And the very fact his coffin had to remain closed – it doesn’t really give a chance to grieve properly or to see him as he was. They can only rely on their memories and that makes their sadness and their grief all the harder.”

After the mass, tearful family and friends gathered around the coffin before it was brought out from the church to Tina Turner’s song Simply The Best.

At least 10 bikes were seen blocking off traffic as the funeral cortege drove in cars near the church.

Beeping loudly, vehicles moved in convoy with Maguire’s remains which were in a horse-drawn hearse.

He was then brought to Newlands

Cross Cemetery. Maguire died in a BMW alongside Graham Taylor and Carl Freeman on June 6. The driver of the lorry they hit is recovering.

The three dead men had over 200 convictions between them.

Maguire had more than 25 convictions, including for burglary.

He was wanted by UK police after he fled from a Hollesley Bay prison in England on October 17, 2018.

The trio worked for a notorious Tallaghtbased burglary gang. Taylor’s funeral takes place today and Freeman is being laid to rest on Monday.
