JAG LAWRENCE IS HAIR TO THE NFL CROWN

Trevor primed for greatness – and his first win is in London

- BY KEITH WEBSTER

WITH his long blond locks and laid-back

demeanour, Trevor Lawrence is primed to be the next cab off the sporting hipster rank.

For a Tommy Fleetwood approach to the 18th at St Andrews or a Stefanos Tsitsipas drop shot on Centre Court, we could soon be looking at a Lawrence touchdown pass at the Super Bowl.

Selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars this year with the first pick in the NFL Draft, the 22-year-old has as much weight on his shoulders as Gareth Southgate’s young Englishmen heading for the Qatar World Cup.

Since their birth in 1995, the Jaguars have rarely been worth the admission price. Over the past 10 seasons this team has been the poster child for sporting desperation. Mediocrity would be a welcome blessing.

England’s 30, 40, 50 years of hurt resonate in

Florida with a team and a set of fans who have watched others revel in triumph while they wallow in despair.

Enter Trevor Lawrence five months ago to Messianic acclaim – a saviour in a time and a town of wavering faith. There were attempts by other teams to lure Jacksonville into a trade to get him, such was the belief in his ability.

Whether or not Lawrence delivers on his potential in years to come, he will not forget the first time in his 22 years that he crossed an ocean, from north Florida to north London, to see thousands of his own No.16 shirts staring back at him in the 60,784 crowd at Tottenham.

Having started his career as a professional athlete with five straight losses, a last-gasp Matthew Wright 53-yard field goal (above) sealed a thrilling debut win.

After a nervy start, British fans were treated to one special moment that opened the imagination to Lawrence’s potential.

With 40 seconds left in the first half, he fired a laser strike down the right sideline to Marvin Jones, who made a twisting, diving catch for a spectacular touchdown.

Lawrence sacrificed himself to a huge hit from Jerome Baker as he let go of the pass, exhibiting that his talent is matched by bravery.

With that he set the pulses racing and a comeback win in motion, with Wright landing field goals of 54 and 53 yards late in the game to win it.

There will be many firsts in Trevor Lawrence’s career, but his first win will always belong to London.
