LEES AIMING TO PUT HIS HUDD UP

TOM LEES still dreams of playing in the Premier League after twice experiencing Championship play-off heartache.

Lees was part of the Sheffield Wednesday team that lost in the play-off final to Hull in 2016 before being beaten in the semifinals by the Terriers a year later.

The defender scored the opening goal as Huddersfield moved into the top six with this victory. The Championship season is just 12 games old and the 30-year-old refuses to look too far ahead when it comes to achieving his ambition of appearing in the top flight.

He said: “It’s something that, before I finish playing, I’d love to be able to say I’ve done something special like that, achieve something.

“I’ve got a lot of appearances

something like that would be brilliant. One time in the Premier League, that’s the dream.

“But I think that’s a way off yet and we’ll see. With 10 games to go if you are in and around there, then you have a chance.”

Boss Carlos Corberan will prepare his Huddersfield team for another home game on Wednesday, against out-of-form Birmingham, seeking to continue a three-match unbeaten run which has garnered the Terriers seven points. But previous experience has shown him that now is not the time to start thinking beyond the next game.

Corberan (right) said: “We know it’s early doors and when it comes to January time, there will be many teams in with a shout.

“Wednesday is going to be another tough one and we just have to reset.”

The Tigers remain 21st after the defeat which was sealed by a peach of a goal from Duane Holmes (below). Centralbut defender Jacob Greaves was one of the standout players and almost got on the scoresheet only for keeper Lee Nicholls to tip his goalbound header over the bar.

The 21-year-old’s father Mark also played for Hull, making more than 175 appearances between 1996 and 2002 and Greaves is grateful to be able to call on his dad’s experience.

He believes the Tigers are good enough to remain in the Championship starting this Wednesday against fellow strugglers Peterborough at the KCOM Stadium, saying: “I feel we do belong here but there’s definitely improvements that we can make.”

He, too, has his sights on playing at the very top.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed the step up in the league and I love coming to the different stadiums and stuff – it’s miles better than playing League One – so if I can stay here and learn my trade then obviously the end goal is to try and play in the Premier League.”
