WINKS WAITS TO COME IN FROM COLD

- BY MIKE WALTERS

HARRY WINKS launched a scathing attack on Tottenham’s Euro trash – and admitted he was unhappy after going from England international to midweek auxiliary with Spurs.

Less than a year ago, Winks was winning his 10th cap against Iceland.

But the midfielder cut a desolate figure after the dismal 1-0 defeat to Vitesse in the Europa Conference League. And although his heart belongs to Tottenham, Winks does not intend to remain a bit-part player.

Spurs came unstuck in Holland after making 11 changes, but a starting line-up containing nine full internationals did little to force their way into first-team contention.

In a brutal analysis of his own form, Winks (above) admitted the day may be approaching - “when the time is right” - to discuss his future with manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Asked if he fans should expect more of the squad, he replied: “They should do. We’re

Tottenham and whoever goes on the pitch, we should be winning these kind of games. As players we hold our hands up.

We’re the ones on the pitch. No excuses. But when you play one game every few weeks, it’s difficult to match that energy, that tempo.”

Is it hard for Winks to feel he is consigned to Tottenham’s second string? “It is tough. We’re meant to be a team. Everybody should be fighting to play in weekend games. I love Tottenham, but want to play regular football.

“The only way to play your best football and build momentum is when you’re playing regularly. I’m giving my all for the club. They stuck by me, I stuck by them – and I want to play for Tottenham. But it is difficult when you get matches here and there.

“My confidence is low. When players aren’t playing well and only have yourself to blame, it’s difficult.

“I’m man enough to admit I need to improve. But the only way to do that is getting minutes and getting that sharpness back.”

Another England discard, Dele Alli, looked a lost soul in Arnhem but Nuno (above) said: “All the players in our squad have to realise there will be ups and downs. It’s my job to try to make the best out of them, Dele included.

“It’s up to us to get him back to his best.”
