BRAVE attack victim Sean Cox was welcomed back to his “happy place” Anfield as his club took a massive step towards another Champions League Final.

Liverpool fan Sean ,57, suffered severe head injuries when he was violently assaulted in an unprovoked attack outside the famous stadium in 2018 before a Champions League match against Italian club AS Roma.

Wednesday’s first leg tie against Spain’s Villarreal was almost exactly four years after the life-changing incident of April 24, 2018.

Sean, from Dunboyne, Co Meath, was welcomed with open arms as a VIP guest by manager Jurgen Klopp, captain Virgil van Dijk, and club legend Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool beat the Europa League champions.

It was a special birthday win for the dad-of-three, who turned 57 earlier this month, and was all smiles with wife Martina.

The family’s Facebook page Support Sean Cox posted: “Sean was delighted to be back at Anfield for the first time in over two years to watch his beloved Liverpool FC’S 2-0 win against Villarreal.

“The red carpet was rolled out for Sean and Martina by many of his LFC heroes, with Jurgen Klopp, Kenny Dalglish and Virgil van Dijk all dropping by to welcome Sean back to his happy place.”

Former company director Sean was in a life-threatening coma for two months after the 2018 assault.

Bighearted supporters from all over the world rallied to offer financial help after he suffered major head trauma in the attack.

Simone Mastrelli, 33, from Rome, pleaded guilty to the attack and was jailed in February 2019 for three-and-a-half years.

Two other men were also jailed – but it emerged in April 2020 that all three had been released and were back in Italy, living as free men.

Sean’s brother Peter said last year: “Martina has had to fight and fight for Sean to help him. She’s just an amazing woman.”

He added: “Sean’s never going to walk again, he’s never going to talk again and he needs 24-hour care… It is heartbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking.”

His heroes welcomed him back to his happy place
