Advice drive to fight costs

HOUSEHOLDERS across Ireland are being urged to reduce their energy use as part of a new government campaign highlighting tips and support to lower bills.
The nationwide public information push, called Reduce Your Use, also aims to encourage energy efficiency.
With the cost of fossil fuels skyrocketing since the pandemic and now the war in Ukraine, people are struggling to pay ever-rising electricity, gas and oil bills, as well as record road fuel costs.
In response, the Government has introduced a raft of measures to help households and businesses cope with soaring energy prices.
They include the roll-out of insulation grants, €200 electricity credit, VAT reduction on gas, reduced excise on fuel and a rise in the fuel allowance.
But this new information campaign hopes to provide some practical advice to help people reduce their energy use and cut bills.
Tips from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland include:
Heating: Use timers and thermostats to heat your home and heat water when you need it, to the temperature you need.
Appliances: Use cookers, tumble dryers, washing machines, showers and kettles efficiently and outside peak hours.
Travel: Avoid using your car for short journeys; consider walking, cycling or public transport.
Driving: Drive at lower speeds, where practical, to reduce fuel use.
A Department of the Environment spokesperson said: “The campaign has a message that people can take actions in their own homes, and together reduce the impact of rising energy costs and wider international energy challenges.”
