Angelino has Gers weeping

RB Leipzig Rangers

Europa League, semi-final, 1st Leg

RANGERS fell to a narrow defeat as Angelino’s late stunner gave RB Leipzig the advantage in their Europa League semi-final.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side had frustrated Leipzig and looked set to head back to Ibrox all square before Angelino (above) volleyed home on 85 minutes.

But Rangers will still fancy their chances on home soil in the second leg – despite being second best last night.

The Scottish champions were happy to sit deep but it nearly proved their undoing as Connor Goldson escaped conceding an early penalty for hauling down Christopher Nkunku.

The lively Nkunku threatened again and Gers needed defender Calvin Bassey to come the rescue with a timely intervention.

Rangers were clearly intent on frustrating the hosts and looking to do the damage back in Glasgow.

But having already won in Germany in this competition by beating Borussia Dortmund 4-2 earlier this year, the Light Blues had what it takes to win here.

However the loss of injured striker Alfredo Morelos, a scorer against Dortmund, was keenly felt.

For all of Leipzig’s dominance, keeper Allan Mcgregor had little to do and Rangers came out with more attacking intent after the break.

Ryan Kent was close to an instant opener when his angled shot slipped just wide of the post.

But while Rangers were growing in confidence, Leipzig still looked the more likely to grab a goal.

Striker Nkunku will be wondering how he missed in the 70th minute when he skipped round Mcgregor only to blaze the ball over.

Tyler Adams then forced Mcgregor into a smart save but he was beaten when former Manchester City defender Angelino thumped home a fine winner at the death.
