Tributes flood in as pair make boxing history in the MSG ring
MICHAEL D Higgins and Micheal Martin led the tributes to Katie Taylor yesterday following her landmark victory in Madison Square Garden.
President Higgins congratulated the athlete “on retaining her world lightweight boxing titles. Another fantastic achievement in her monumental career”.
While the Taoiseach described the win as one “borne out of courage, determination, skill and stamina”.
He added: “The whole country is very proud of you and all your achievements over the years.”
Former One Direction singer Niall Horan shared his excitement on her success, posting: “What a performance from both ladies so happy for Katie Taylor.”
Olympic gold winner and boxer Kellie Harrington sent her support, saying:
“Incredible, absolutely incredible. What a warrior.”
And singer
Imelda May simply stated
“She did it again” followed by three love hearts in green, white and gold.

“Katie Taylor the greatest absolutely incredible boxing, take a bow ladies what a contest.”
While Oscar winner Charlize Theron described the fight as “inspiring”.
The movie star tweeted: “About f ***** g time! Only took 140 years to get two female fighters to headline MSG but Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano did the damn thing. You ladies inspire the hell out of me and women everywhere.”
Katie’s opponent Amanda Serrano was also praised for her gracious defeat.
In a tweet after the match she wrote: “Hey my people, I didn’t get the decision but I think I fought a great fight. Congratulations to Katie Taylor.
“I’m happy we made women’s boxing look great tonight. Now I go and start spending some of my money lol”.
In a second tweet she added: “I said it before couldn’t have asked for a better dance partner.”
