KILLER HITMAN ON JAIL DAY RELEASE

Gun-for-hire Wilson let out as part of his rehabilitation

- BY JOHN KIERANS

A NOTORIOUS hitman serving a life sentence was let out of prison for the day.

Keith Wilson was accompanied by three jailors when he was granted a day release over a week ago.

It is understood he was freed on compassionate grounds as part of his rehab process.

The 34-year-old killer is one of three brothers who were all guns-for-hire in the Dublin underworld.

Wilson has served over 12 years so far in Mountjoy for the brutal murder of a Real IRA member Daniel Gaynor as he strolled along a Finglas street with his girlfriend and two sons in August 2010. He walked up and shot him in the neck.

Wilson flew into Ireland from Spain a few days before the hit and returned a few days afterwards under a false name.

He was hired by a Ballyfermot gangster involved in the smuggled cigarette trade to avenge the murder of another man believed to have been executed by Gaynor. The victim was a former associate of Real IRA leader Alan Ryan who was also later assassinated.

Wilson has applied for parole and is said to be a model prisoner.

A Mountjoy source revealed: “He was let out for the day and was accompanied by three officers. It is all part of his rehabilitation, he has done everything he has been asked to do in prison and keeps his nose clean.

He is not on an early release programme just yet but is heading in that direction over time.”

Keith’s brother Eric “Lucky” Wilson is currently serving a minimum 23-year sentence in a Spanish prison for killing English criminal Dan Smith on the Costa del Sol, also in 2010.

He is suspected of carrying out at least a dozen gangland hits in Ireland. Keith had been living with him for a while in Spain. Their eldest brother John, another known hitman, was assassinated in Dublin 2012.

The Wilson brothers featured in bestselling book, The Hitman.
