Let’s join the Conversation
Drama follows Normal People
THE most anticipated TV series this year starts tonight – Conversations with Friends – the follow-up to Sally Rooney’s phenomenon Normal People.
Like its predecessor, the Irishbased drama is based on a novel by the Co Mayo writer.
Directed by mastermind Lenny Abrahamson, it tells the story of an erotic love affair between starcrossed lovers.
It may be as successful as Normal People, which was streamed more than 62 million times and became a cultural event in lockdown.
It catapulted Paul Mescal as Connell and Daisy Edgar-jones – as Marianne – to global fame.
Now, fans are eagerly waiting to see the next cast of actors poised for superstardom. Cork newcomer Alison Oliver, 24, plays the lead role of Frances.
Taylor Swift’s actor boyfriend Joe Alwyn, 31, Girls star Jemima Kirke, 37, and US actress Sasha Lane may become well-known names.
It examines the relationship between Trinity College student Frances, 21, and her best friend and former girlfriend Bobbi.
Things get complicated when they become involved with a sexy married couple, writer Melissa (Kirke) and her actor husband Nick (Alwyn).
Oscar-nominated director Lenny Abrahamson has returned to the helm joined by writers Alice Birch and Mark O’halloran.
The drama, commissioned by BBC in partnership with Hulu, was made by Element Pictures in association with RTE, co-financed by Northern Ireland Screen. So ahead of tonight’s double header, here’s everything you need to know.
Conversations with Friends begin on RTE One and RTE Player tonight at 9.35pm. It will run for six weeks, with two episodes on Wednesdays.
