Youngest guns look Confident
BY MARK MCCADDEN CONOR COVENTRY has hailed the younger members of Ireland’s Under-21 squad.
Joe Hodge slotted in alongside the West Ham midfielder for his debut at this level during last Friday’s 1-1 draw with Israel.
And 17-year-old Evan Ferguson (inset) scored the crucial equaliser at Tallaght Stadium.
Wolves ace Hodge, who turned 20 earlier this month, put in an outstanding performance in the first leg stalemate.
“It was his first game and he came in with a lot of personality and bravery,” said Coventry.
“He was really good in and out of possession. It made it easy to play with him and he really did well.”
As for Ferguson, he said: “He’s right up there. To be playing at this level at his age, you’ve got to be a top player.
“He’s scoring as well. He’s really contributing to the games, so he’s a top player with a massive future. He’s got to keep working hard and keep himself in the right place.
“You forget how young he is, especially when you look at him, how good he is. And he’s so good physically as well.
“He’s got enough personality, a really important part of the group and everyone loves having him here.”
Coventry says Ireland aren’t flustered by being potentially just 90 minutes away from their dream coming true.
“I think qualifying is something we have been dreaming about for a year now,” he said.
“Everyone knows what we’re close to. We have aimed to be that close to it now for quite a while so it’s almost natural, it’s a bit more familiar.
“Everyone is calm, and looking forward to it.”
