Bob gets a kick out of Scots who are winners

- BY CRAIG SWAN

BOB MACINTYRE is taking inspiration from Scotland’s sporting success as he bids to justify Ryder Cup faith.

After Italian Open glory, his bid to make Luke

Donald’s Rome team continues at the Alfred Dunhill Links.

Macintyre was straight on to social media after Steve Clarke’s footballers topped their Nations League group and said: “I’m a diehard Scot.

“It’s on my golf ball every day I play. The country means everything to me. In sport we get battered, we get told we’re not good enough. It’s always about how we’re not doing well enough.

“You know what? For a small country we punch hard. I’ve grown up playing all the sports – football, shinty. To see Scotland doing so well in so many different sports now is brilliant and it’s only going to get better.”

Macintyre knows there’s a

long way to go until the Ryder Cup but his aims are clear and he’s got some Major backers.

Europe’s main man Rory Mcilroy and Shane Lowry both back the Oban ace’s bid.

Mcilroy said: “Hopefully the win in Italy will give him a good dose of confidence to move on and qualify for the team. If not qualify, play well enough to warrant a pick.”

And Lowry said of the 26-year-old: “Bob looks like a determined, gritty character. It doesn’t matter who he stands on the first tee against, he feels he can beat them.

“People like that, you want on your team.”

Macintyre takes confidence from such words and said: “It’s brilliant to have the respect of Major champions like Shane. He’s won Majors and played in Ryder Cups.

“That’s what I’m trying to get to. It’s cool to hear these words but I have to knuckle down.”
