Apocalypse now-ish

EVERYONE ELSE BURNS

Channel 4, 10pm THIS quirky new sitcom stars Simon Bird as the head of a strict religious family who believes the world is about to end.

A unique concept that gives off Book of Mormon vibes (but don’t worry, far less rude), it sees the funny side of one family’s faith.

And for the Lewises, faith is everything. Dad David (Bird) and his wife Fiona (Kate O’flynn) have brought up their children with God at the forefront of their minds, and regularly run “apocalypse practice”.

“Pack your things, the end time is here!” screams David, shaking the kids awake in the middle of the night and clanging a bell. “Get downstairs before your soul turns to ash.”

For young Aaron (Harry Connor), a model believer who’s eagerly awaiting the rapture, this is a welcome routine. But anxious 17-year-old Rachel (Amy Jameskelly) is less fond.

In the first episode of a double bill, David is desperate for a long-awaited promotion to church elder. But his hip neighbour Andrew (Kadiff Kirwan) also has his eyes on the job.

Meanwhile, while she’s out preaching the word of God around Manchester, Rachel meets a handsome boy who could change her life – or perhaps get her exiled from the whole family.

Watch out for Lolly Adefope as Rachel’s bemused school teacher who thinks she should go to university – but Rachel’s parents are horrified by this “moral hazard”.

In the second episode, David unearths a 1,000-year-old rule book and uses it to police his family, while Rachel wants a mobile phone.

Blessings sinners, it’s worth a watch!
