GREENWOOD AT UNITED Games ............ 130 Goals ............... 36 with attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour. But the Crown Prosecution Service said the charges had been discontinued after some witnesses no longer wanted to be involved in the case.

In a statement released on Greenwood’s behalf, he said: “I am relieved this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support. There will be no further comment at this time.”

United said it would ”now conduct its own process before determining the next steps” but gave no indication of how long that might take.

Options include inviting Greenwood back to training, offering to pay up his contract or selling him in the summer. He was suspended by the club soon after his arrest but has been paid in full throughout the legal process.

He has remained on the firstteam squad list on United’s official website and has a contract until 2025 worth close to £100,000-a-week.

It is understood boss Erik ten Hag has not met Greenwood since taking charge in June – and will have to assess the possible implications of having him back in the fold.

The 21-year-old has scored 35 goals in 129 matches since making his debut for the Reds in March 2019. His last appearance was in the 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham on January 22 last year and his last goal in a 3-1 win at Brentford three days before.

Greenwood, whose No.11 shirt number has not been reallocated, won his one England cap against Iceland in 2020.
