CROUCH FEELS SHAKE-UP WILL GET GO-AHEAD

- BY JOHN CROSS

FORMER Sports Minister Tracey Crouch has welcomed “positive” news on plans for a new independent regulator of English football.

Crouch, who conducted a fan-led review, has championed tougher rules for clubs and a greater share of cash to be distributed throughout the football pyramid.

Supporters could be given a “golden share” so they are party to future decision-making in an attempt to stop secret breakaways happening again following the European Super League proposal.

The Government is due to publish a detailed white paper on new legislation for football but it seems clear Ministers are now pushing ahead with plans to revamp the sport’s governance.

Crouch (above) said: “I haven’t seen the details yet of the white paper, but the indications are positive that the government will introduce an independent regulator via legislation with backstop powers on financial redistribution.

“While it may be the case that some recommendations from the fan-led review are not going to be implemented, arguably, the most important ones are. From what I’ve read, it looks like the government has accepted and will act on the fundamental recommendation of introducing an independent regulator underpinned by legislation.”

EFL and Premier League bosses have had discussions about trying to find a compromise on matters such as a levy on transfers being paid out.

There have also been calls for greater controls of ownership and takeovers but the white paper may not cover that, leaving it up to the Premier League and EFL to decide.

Football Supporters’ Association chair Kevin Miles welcomed the idea of “stronger tests on potential club owners, more supporter engagement, blocks on breakaway competitions like the European Super League and the establishment of an independent regulator”.

Miles (above) added: “We look forward to seeing the full white paper on its release and, once again, we will enthusiastically and constructively engage with the consultation process to ensure the regulator becomes as effective as possible.”

■■OMAR BECKLES has been elected as the new PFA chairman. “I’m honoured,” said the Leyton Orient defender. “It’s a real privilege to be chosen to represent the players.”
