Creator Sally is millionaire from all her TV triumphs

- EXCLUSIVE BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG & MARK JEFFERIES

CRIME really does pay for Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright as she’s a multimillionaire thanks to her award-winning TV work.

The screenwriter is set to make a killing from the series with tough cop Sarah Lancashire.

She was behind bodice-ripper Gentleman Jack, with Suranne Jones as a bed-hopping Victorian lesbian in the BBC One drama.

And Yorkshire-born Sally is the creator of two other TV cop shows, Scott and Bailey, and gripping Unforgiven, both starring ex-corrie favourite Suranne.

She also penned the hit comedy drama Last Tango in Halifax, which has sparked huge demand for another series on BBC One.

COFFERS

Sally is a former bus driver and Coronation Street scriptwriter and the latest accounts for the company that handles income from her writing show a healthy balance.

Sparkhouse Productions Ltd has more than €3.35million in cash in its coffers.

The figures also revealed she has paid more than €1,000,000 in Corporation Tax in the past three years, which means an income of around €5.6million.

Her next year’s figures look set to be even healthier when money comes in from the sale of Happy Valley to TV channels around the world.

Sally also worked on Radio 4 drama The Archers and ITV’S Emmerdale. And she credits her early works on the soaps for her later career success.

The BBC’S Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore said: “Happy Valley is the ultimate event TV, Sally Wainwright’s emotional rollercoaster has gripped the nation and grown week on week across the start of 2023.

“Water cooler moments don’t get much bigger than the unmissable final ever episode.”
