ARMAGH IN SEMIS BUT HANDS OUT

1-14 Tyrone

- Armagh BY KEVIN KELLY

ARMAGH knocked Tyrone out of the Mckenna Cup and claimed a semi-final spot as best runner-up last night.

Half a dozen points without reply either side of the break saw the Orchard come from behind to establish a lead they were never to lose despite a fortunate Tyrone goal deep into injury time.

It was Tyrone who greeted the half-time whistle with a slender 1-7 to 1-6 advantage after an opening period that saw the hosts’ forwards fail to score a point from play.

Tyrone grabbed a 10th minute goal. Brian Kennedy delivered a long ball into the danger area which James Garrity got on the end of to feed centre half back Tarlach Quinn for a close range finish.

Within two minutes Armagh got a goal of their own from an unlikely source with corner back Peter Mcgrane blasting the ball to the roof of the net after taking a pass from Oisin O’neill who was making his first Orchard appearance in 18 months.

O’neill converted a brace of frees to level matters before a third edged Armagh in front for the first time.

A Cian Mcconville free and a point from play from Mcgrane saw the hosts end the half on top.

Armagh picked up were they had left off on the restart and O’neill knocked over another free with the man of the match then adding a quality effort from play.

Tyrone were dealt a blow going into injury time when they lost Mckernan to a second yellow card after a foul on substitute Jemar Hall.

Armagh centre half half back Niall Rowland got forward to notch a good point and that was followed by one from Joe Sheridan.

Three minutes into injury time a speculative high ball in from Dalaigh Jones sailed all the way to the net but Armagh held on.
