I celebrated birthday with rock shandy... in a Guinness glass

SEAN BRYAN

GUINNESS-MAD Sean Bryan yesterday shrugged off critics after boasting he downed 81 pints in a weekend and said: “I didn’t have a hangover.”

Facebook users lined up to condemn the 33-year-old’s post about the “dangerous” stunt, which had almost 10,000 likes and shares.

The Kilkenny man told how he started his drinking session at 1pm on Friday, December 29, at his local pub and continued over the next two days.

Sean’s binge ended with his 81st pint which he drank at 9pm on New Year’s Eve and he went to bed before midnight.

The 6ft 4ins stout lover said he spent around €400 on beer across the three days. But many social media users were unimpressed because of the risks and said he was “stupid” the boast about it.

But Sean hit back: “I don’t think it’s dangerous to do on the odd occasion but if you were doing it week by week it would be.

“But as it was a one-off and because it was Christmas, [it was OK] and I don’t really ever count calories.

“I started drinking on Friday December 29 and I had my first Guinness at about 1pm in the local pub. I went home every night but [returned every day and] stayed in the pub over the

weekend drinking. I managed to drink 81 pints of Guinness and this beat my last record of 78.

“It was not really a challenge I set myself, it just became a kick between friends. I was just at the pub drinking with friends.

“I had my 81st pint on Sunday December 31, at 9pm and then I went home at 10pm, so I did not carry on drinking into the New Year.

“I didn’t have a hangover but I was quite tired. An average pint of Guinness in a pub in Europe is about €5 and in total I spent about €400 on pints of Guinness.”

According to the HSE, men should have fewer than 17 standard drinks – a half pint of beer, a small glass of wine or a spirit measure – while women should have fewer than 11. Long-term alcohol misuse can result in a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, liver disease and increased chance of stroke.

A pint of Guinness contains 210 calories and Sean guzzled down more than 17,000 calories in three days.

Despite others raising safety concerns the security shift worker said his friends challenged him to drink 100 pints in three days.

But he is not going to try it as he believes this might be impossible.

Sean added: “People in the comments were saying I would be dead before I was 40 and I was very unhealthy looking and I did take this a bit to heart. [Drinking the 81 Guinnesses] is over and done with now but I wouldn’t want any young

people reading this and thinking of me as a role model or anything like that.

“I just did it for a bit of craic. It was enjoyable to do at the time though and I think as a one off it’s OK to do. On social media everyone has an opinion. That’s the generation we’re growing up in now and that’s the way it is.”

Sean’s post was inundated with more than 3,900 comments – many criticising him or raising concerns for his health. One user said: “Impressive...not.” A second said: “It’s a stupid thing to be boasting about, whatever you may say about it.”

Another wrote: “Stupidity at its finest, boasting that they can drink themselves to death. I would have more respect if he had told everyone he has been sober for 81 days. Far more of an achievement.”

A fourth commented: “Savage amount of stout – wouldn’t even drink that much in a month.”

However, some appeared impressed. One person said: “What a unit. Absolute legend, that one. Bravo.”

Another added: “Keep going! 100 pints is right there for the taking!”

And Sean added: “Considering the abuse and health advice I received from many wonderful people and doctors and psychiatrists in this group on New Year’s Eve I celebrated my birthday with a rock shandy but insisted on a Guinness glass.”
